German federal Government decides on 2030 climate protection programme

After several months of negotiations the Federal Government reached an agreement in September and October 2019 on a national climate protection package. With the aid of this set of measures the German greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by at least 55 % by 2030 relative to 1990. So far the federal republic has achieved an abatement of about 35 %.The background to the current climate change policy debate has been widespread concerns regarding the attainability of the 2020 and 2030 climate targets, especially in the traffic and building (non-ETS) sectors.
