Russia looks to retaliate: Uneasy - nay - fiery relations between Europe and Russia are dominating the headlines. Forwarders are reporting feeling "jittery" about trade between the two, and concerned that sanctions could "wipe out a lucrative sector." One forwarder bemoaned that the impact of sanctions could mean "flights serving Moscow from Amsterdam and Frankfurt will have little or no traffic for Moscow, traffic that moves at a premium". With exports for the oil industry from Europe to Russia now facing heavy restrictions, major multinationals such as JCB and Siemens have noted the impact the ban will have. But falling consumer confidence and diminished buying power in Russia, already on the brink of a recession, will mean other markets, such as the automotive sector, are affected too - all of which is likely to dim the logistics business's fortunes. Several travel companies have also gone bust, leaving thousands of Russian holiday-makers stranded. Sanctions applied by the EU at the end of July forced Dobrolet, Aeroflot's new low cost subsidiary, to ground its aircraft as lessor BBAM, as well as Lufthansa Technik and other European suppliers, ended support.
