In what is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the use of smart cards in the transportation sector, the first programme to involve travellers across an entire country with all means of public transport is being prepared for roll-out in the Dutch Trans Link project. The project, which has a pre-launch scheduled for December 2004 and a launch date of 2005, has been established to initiate e-payment in buses, trains, metro cars and trains in the Netherlands. The aim is to build a system that is convenient, fast and safe to use.
