More than a third of local councils in England and Wales are considering imposing a speed limit of 20mph in town centres. This is following the successful implementation of a 20mph limit in Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, York and several areas of London, which has reduced road casualties by as much as a quarter. In a recent report by The Independent newspaper, 27 local authorities said they were in the process of creating default 20mph zones, while a further six councils said they were awaiting guidelines from the Department for Transport before reaching a decision on new speed limits.
