Many vehicles now employ the use of an in-tank electric fuel pump, and cars that use such a pump usually have an access hole in the rear floor. This is normally below the rear passenger seat and fixed in place with six or more bolts. This means that removing the in-tank pump is simply a matter of lifting up the rear seat, removing the access plate and extracting the pump from the tank. When the pump failed on this 1999 Ford Fiesta, there was no such access under the rear seat and we needed to drop the fuel tank to complete the job. However, to add to the problem, the tank was full and needed to be emptied before starting the job.
