It's like driving. We all like to think of ourselves as good at it. No-one's willing to admit they've got anything to learn. I was struck by this walking on the Oxford summit recently. It was a crisp, clear day with a tinkling of ice on the cut; and I'd paused to watch a boat make a perfect approach to a bridge through which another boat had just passed. But then the other boat panicked. It suddenly veered left when it should have gone right. It slowed down when it should have accelerated. The steerer was lucky to avoid a collision.
