Our first foray into narrow boating occurred in 1968 as an engaged couple during the summer holiday between finishing teacher training and starting work. (Seldom such a thing as a 'gap-year' then. 'You must earn a living and support yourself now!) We went with another couple on the Shroppie and Llangollen canals on a hire boat from Wheaton Aston.rnIt was wooden, clinker-built cruiser powered by a two-cylinder, two-stroke petrol engine. It had a sliding roof over the middle section from which it was steered by a wooden wheel. Fore and aft were the sleeping cabins, the rear one (ours!) trebling/dining and living rooms.
