INTERMITTENT CHARGING PROBLEMS

I have intermittent battery charging problems with my cruiser's BMC Captain diesel engine. On two occasions the (AC) alternator did not charge the batteries; the ammeter read zero and the Webasto diesel heater failed due to low voltage, even when the engine was running. I took the alternator apart and cleaned the slip rings. The carbon brush length of outer ring was 5mm longer than the required minimum. I will try to get a new brush holder with brushes.rnIs there any well known most common root cause of this type of problem? I'm considering buying a spare 4TR alternator controller and maybe a spare 6RA relay.
