If it were a building, it would be Grade I listed. It would feature in glossy coffee-table books about England. It would be said of it that it epitomises something of the essence of our nation, that its beauty is the beauty of old Albion, rooted in our past and our sense of ourselves. If it were a building and someone wanted to destroy it, then there'd be outraged letters to The Times and MPs would be lobbied, and there'd be demonstrations with young, pigtailed idealists chaining themselves to trees. But it's not a building; it's a canal. And not a complete canal either: just a section of one, just a small part of one out in the middle of the countryside, near to nothing or no-one.
