Charity fund gives canals £¼m

A major step forward in the development of 'charitable' fundraising for the Canal & River Trust will see a £249,000 grant for environmental and community projects on the Pennine and Midland canals from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation matched by £100,000 from the People's Postcode Lottery. The money will pay for tree and hedge management, water quality improvement, removal of invasive species and linking of isolated populations of native plant species along the waterways to create resilient wildlife corridors. The work will increase the number of volunteer groups supporting canal lengths under CRT's 'Adopt a Canal' initiative, and will focus on three areas - Rochdale (pictured), Huddersfield and Birmingham - chosen for nature interest.
