Steam was something of a double-edged sword for the canals - at first it powered the industries that relied on canal transport and the many stationary engines that supplied canals with water (as well as such unglamorous tasks as pumping sewage), but the arrival of the steam railway sounded the death-knell for some canals and severely dented the prosperity of others. But both are now part of our transport heritage, so what better way to enjoy our steam history heritage than by arriving at the engine house or railway by canal? We've selected ten working steam sites you can visit by canal but there are plenty more.
