War hero to canal battler

In May 1915,18-year old Able Seaman Leslie Morton was the look-out on the starboard bow of the great Cunard passenger ship Lusitania. He described how he saw "two white streaks running along the top of the water like an invisible hand with a piece of chalk on a blackboard. They were heading straight across to intercept the course of the Lusitania. I grabbed the megaphone and reported to the bridge Torpedoes coming on the starboard side, Sir.'" Then followed two tremendous explosions. Less than 20 minutes later the huge liner sank, the German torpedoes having achieved their awful objective. Close to 2,000 were on board: 1,195 met their deaths. Leslie Morton was one of the lucky ones who literally swam for his life.
