She wasn't an easy woman to deal with, even her best friends would never claim that. Even so, the death last year of Irene who for many years lived at Bourton lock cottage north of Banbury was a sad loss to anyone who values people of strong character, or an eccentric nature. Irene was a testimony to plain-speaking, an antithesis of the mealy-mouthed carefulness that characterises our politically correct age. If Irene felt something, she expressed it; if she wanted to do something, she did it. Many will remember her long-running battle with British Waterways about the correct name of what they persisted in calling 'Little' Bourton lock, and what she insisted was just Bourton Lock. So determined was she about this minor detail of waterways history that she consistently defaced the lock sign to make her point.
