Despite the turmoil of contemporary architectural thought and practice, the elemental aspects of the Banff Session have re-mained intact over 50 years. As H.L. Bouey, Alberta architect, noted in a letter to the American Institute of Architects in 1955, the first proposed Banff Session was to be held in 1956 with seminars focused on art and architecture to provide interest and education for practicing architects. The Session coordinators went on to contact some of the pre-eminent practitioners of the day including Pietro Belluschi, Marcel Breuer and Eero Saarinen, to invite them to lead an intensive two-week program. As responses were garnered, suggestions were offered as to the nature of the course and the role of its participants, signifying the beginning of an evolving and dynamic planning process.
