When Hollywood movie studio Relativity Media found in 2015 that it couldn't repay an almost $80 million loan arranged by OneWest Bank, it put Steven Mnuchin in an awkward position. Mnuchin ran OneWest, but he was also co-chairman of Relativity and head of a hedge fund with a stake in the studio. OneWest ultimately recouped most of its money at the cost of helping tip the studio into bankruptcy, while Mnuchin and his hedge fund investors saw their equity investments wiped out.
