America's Warning to the World: Beware Huawei

The U.S. indictments handed down against Huawei Technologies Co. on Jan. 28 didn't explicitly mention anything about 5G networks or China's spy agency. But they sent a clear message to world leaders weighing whether to use Huawei equipment for the next-generation wireless networks: China's largest technology company is a threat to your national security.In a 13-count indictment in Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S. prosecutors accused Huawei, two affiliated companies, and Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou of bank and wire fraud as well as conspiracy in connection with business in Iran. Charges filed in Washington state allege that the company stole trade secrets from T-Mobile USA Inc. and offered bonuses to employees who succeeded in getting technology from rivals. The cases "expose Huawei's brazen and persistent actions to exploit American companies and financial institutions and to threaten the free and fair global marketplace," FBI director Christopher Wray said at a press conference in Washington announcing the charges.
