OK, it should be clear to just about everyone by now that the Internet isn't the Yellow Brick Road to profitability for carriers, particularly in the network access space. Internet-dependent DLECs have been taking it on the chin on Wall Street, and many have gone out of business completely, stranding their customers. A large part of the problem is the "Internet-dependency" factor; carriers haven't been able to leverage incremental profits out of high-speed Internet access, which suggests that we need to go beyond the Internet to find the justification for DSL. But can we?
