Tom Darby, a leading Irish bus workers' trade union official from 1963 to 1992, died on 10 November. He was 82.rnAs a Dublin City Services conductor with Coras lompair Eireann in the early-1960s, he became disenchanted with the way in which the Irish Transport & General Workers' Union represented bus workers and was a founder member and first general secretary of the breakaway Dublin Busmen's Union in 1963. After provincial bus staff were admitted, the union was then renamed the National Busmen's Union and opened its first office in April 1964.rnDarby soon became its public face and was noted for his militant maverick style. He pioneered the one-day strike where unions lacked funds to provide strike pay in protracted stoppages.
