Recent journeys have reminded me that trials and tribulations of the early 21st century include shopping malls-large monuments to retail excess dumped across old street patterns, blocking one's path when closed and leaving one apparently with limited means of escape when lured inside. I recall in 2008 reporting that leaving Preston bus station by the intended route proved time-consuming and disorientating as I sought escape from the shopping emporium in which I found myself, and this made me understand why most people ignored the architect and jaywalked out of the bus station at street level. This seems now to have been officially sanctioned with two pedestrian ways constructed over former bus bays to get folk in and out of the still extant wonder of 1960s design.
