Do you remember the story of the old London Bridge, replaced in 1968 and shipped out and reassembled as a tourist attraction at Lake Havasu City in Arizona? People used to assert that it was all a bit of a mistake: that the Americans thought they were getting Tower Bridge with its lifting bascules and not a 930ft series of rather less exciting and very firmly fixed arches. That, I understand, is just one of those great urban myths, the sort we tell to make ourselves feel superior to the former colony that has long since become a truly global superpower.
