On February 14, ODS-Petrodata Inc. reported the US Department of Energy (DOE) has formed a multi-disciplinary team with Ormat Nevada, Inc., GeothermEx Inc., the University of Utah, the US Geological Survey, and the national laboratories to develop an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in Nevada at the Desert Peak Geothermal Field. The goal is to generate 3-to-5 MWe of geothermal power. The DOE has invested over $5 million in the effort. Analyses are directed toward developing and executing a hydraulic-stimulation program for an in-field, nonproductive well with temperatures over 400°F. The team will try to create or enhance permeability by injecting water at high pressures. "This will be our showcase project," said Allan Jelacic of the DOE.
