Mumbai volumes on the up

Throughput at India's Mumbai port increased by 11% to 28.1 mt in the first six months of the current financial year, which ends in March 2008. This was the fifth successive year that the 137-year-old port has shown an uptrend after a decade of staying in the shadow of JNPT, which was opened in 1989 to take the growing pressure off Mumbai. After handling 29.95 mt in 2003-04, Mumbai notched up 35.11 mt in 2004-05, 44.9 mt in 2005-06, and a high of 52.36 mt in 2006-07, which ended in March.
