'Largest' Hedland growing bigger

Continued growth and a rapidly expanding harbour have led to another record-breaking year for Western Australia's Port Hedland, which continues to hold the position of the world's largest bulk export port. In the 2010/11 financial year the port handled a total throughput of 199.002 mt, eclipsing last year's record tonnage by more than 20 mt. Port Hedland Port Authority noted a slew of other records, including the single largest iron ore shipment to leave port, 247,858t on the vessel cape infinity. In fact, the long-standing record of 234,544t, held by Hyundai giant for over 20 years, was broken twice during the year. The port also saw the largest cargo shipped on a single tide with a total of 914,88 1t aboard five ships.
