South African transport utility Transnet has announced that it intends to construct a new railway from Botswana to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) via the Water-berg Coal Basin. The line will be ready within seven years, according to Transnet Freight Rail CEO Siyabonga Gama. "We would want to unlock the northern mineral belt, and as we do that, we need to facilitate further participation in the coal mining sector by emerging miners, as well as a broad participation by black people," he said.
