South African transport firm Transnet has revealed that it is in formal talks with Botswana to build a rail link between the two countries with transport capacity of up to 80 Mtpa. This confirms a suggestion made by Botswana Railways (BR) two months ago, but the scale of the project was not expected to be so large. A MoU on the venture is to be signed by the two governments. Transnet chairman Popo Molefe commented: "We will ensure that the South African railway system is capacitated to support both the un- locking of Waterberg and Botswana coal reserves." Leonard Makwinja, CEO of BR, said that the 120 km line will cost US$300M to build. The coal route will enter South Africa at Lephalale in Limpopo Province.
