International mining giant Anglo American is bolstering Botswana's plans to develop a viable coal industry. Anglo Thermal Coal has been awarded two three-year licenses to explore properties over the central and southern blocks of the Mmamabula coalfield, which has been previously estimated to contain a 670 million t resource. The move may prove a game changer for Botswana. Anglo has long-established links to Botswana, which include interests crucial to the country's economy. It owns DeBeers, Botswana's 50:50 partner in the exploitation of its diamond resources and development of an international diamond trading hub.
