US newspapers are now using large-format images on their websites, forcing photo editors to re-evaluate their use of photography online.The Boston Globe newspaper launched The Big Picture on 01 June this year, publishing large-format photographs on an online blog format. Last month, rival newspaper The Wall Street Journal weighed in with a similar project, the Big Picture blog. Quickly renamed the Photo Journal, thefirst entry showed a series of hard-hitting images by Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak, depicting the political tensions in Georgia.The New York Times has now joined the fray, using fullscreen photographic slideshows alongside its articles.Developments in broadband technologies and reductions in download speeds now allow an increasing number of web users to load high-resolution images online but, claimthe large format proponents, photographers are not at risk from pirating.
