The first piles for the Bonner Bridge replacement crossing in the USA were finally installed in a ground-breaking ceremony in March, marking welcome progress on a project which has been stalled by legal challenges for some five years. Construction work was originally set to begin three years ago, but the legal challenges were only dropped after an agreement was reached last summer. The original bridge, which opened in 1963, provides the only fixed connection between Hatteras Island and mainland North Carolina. The new 5.6km bridge is being built just west of the existing crossing and is intended to reduce future dredging reguirements while also serving navigation needs and allowing natural channel movement.
