The richness and cultural diversity of drinking behaviors around the world are slowly being exposed by growing research into patterns of alcohol consumption - who drinks, where, when, how, why and what they drink. This research has allowed relationships between various drinking behaviors and autcomes to be defined. While many population-level policy approaches remain useful, the now abundant data on drinking patterns has offered a new approach to policy and preventian that is based on reducing harm for those particularly at risk, and sensitive to the needs of particular groups of individuals who may require special attention. The potential of the drinking patterns paradigm for purposes of harm reductian is tremendous. While inroads into developing policies responsive to what patterns research has revealed are slowly being made, there is much room for expansian and improvement. Drinking patterns offer a valuable toal far examining social, economic and public health relationships, and for addressing the needs 'of populations whose drinking may put them at particular risk for harm. "A shift from a focus on overall consumption to drinking patterns is therefore not merely of theoretical value. It represents a new pragmatism, which can lead to alcohol policies rooted in the interests of the individuals and communities they are intended to serve."
