Watches designed specifically for sailors were once in short supply but nowadays there's a huge choice available, many of which sport specific functions for timing regatta starts. In recent years we've covered many of the latest in BOAT International's pages, but judged on a purely unscientific basis (talking watches with owners and crew and seeing what they're wearing) dive watches remain the default choice of timepiece among regular seafarers. The probable reason for this is that a proper dive watch is simple to read and use, well engineered, tough and surprisingly versatile in terms of what it can be worn with. And, perhaps most importantly, it's a given that it will be reliably waterproof. But what actually constitutes a true diver's timepiece? There are some quite specific criteria that separate a proper dive watch from the mere pretenders, and there is even an ISO standard (number 6425), which determines whether or not a particular model can genuinely cut the mustard.
