SAUL STEINBERG: ILLUMINATIONS

Over the course of almost six decades, between 1941 and 1999, artist and illustrator Saul Steinberg contributed almost 90 covers and more than 1,200 drawings to The New Yorker. Though his career spanned sculpture, murals, fashion, advertising and stage design, Steinberg created his best pieces for that magazine. He began working for the publication in the early 1940s, at a time when it wasrnpublishing renowned pieces by the humorist SJ Perelman, who would become an important influence on the young illustrator; one can observe their similar aptitude for sophisticated parodies, wordplay and satire of high society.
