Located in Forth Worth, Texas, the Amon Carter Museum was established by Amon G. Carter, a self-made man who wanted to create a museum that was free and open to the public and devoted to American art. The building was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1961. The museum's first director, Mitchell A. Wilder (1913-1979), set a high standard in the museum's acquisition program and consequently the museum is known for its distinguished collection of important works by many noted artists. John Rohrbach has been with the Amon Carter since 1992, and is the senior curator of photographs.
