Editorial: Biocatalysis in the Synthesis of Chiral Compounds

An enormous growth has been forecasted for the industrial or so called white biotechnology, which according to a definition of Europa Bio is an emerging field within modern biotechnology. It serves industry using living cells like moulds, yeasts or bacteria, as well as enzymes to produce goods and services. After the red and green biotechnology significantly transformed their respective industries, a similar trend is being expected for white biotechnology and the chemical industry. The American Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is talking about the third wave of biotechnology. This development, however, will critically depend on the development of efficient bioprocesses, which are competitive with classical chemical production methods.
