M1000 Malmberget's third main level

This will be the third such level in Malmberget. Main level number one, at the 600 metre level, was commissioned in 1969. The second and current main level, M-85, started operating in 1989, and will cease to be productive by 2002. When M1000 is operational in 2000, the productive ore base will be an estimated 130 million tonnes of crude ore, giving the new main level a probable working life of about 10 years. 'The crusher and conveyor line will be in operation by September, 1999. We will start by hauling waste rock on the new line. This will enable us to test the new plant under realistic conditions, prior to the start of production in 2000,' explains M1000 project manager, Bo Bergstrom.
