The tragedy of the banking crisis is that stricken banks have, under their roofs, a host of solid and healthy businesses together with one or two problem areas that may be threatening the whole operation. At The Banker it is our aim to report on the crisis but also to keep readers informed of new developments in growing markets. This month, we launch a new Islamic finance section (see page 54) that highlights the scope for expansion of services and products in this area. This complements the ground-breaking research that we did in producing The Top 500 Islamic Financial Institutions in 2007 and 2008. A lot of basic businesses are doing well.
