South Africa's anti-corruption watchdog the Office of the Public Protector, has recommended constitutional changes to shift the priority of the country's central bank from protecting the value of the currency to promoting 'economic growth' and 'socio-economic wellbeing'. In a report issued in late June, public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane advised the chairman of the parliament's justice committee to alter section 224 of the constitution, which details the role and primary objective of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
