"You have to have the courage to try out something new," said Beluga Shipping CEO Niels Stolberg about the first application world-wide of the SkySails towing kite propulsion system.rnThe multi-purpose dry cargo / container carrier 'Beluga Skysails' is the project of Beluga Shipping, Germany and was built by Netherlands-based Volharding Shipyards.rnThe 'Beluga Skysails' is equipped with a kite measuring 160m~2, due to be upscaled to a size of 320m~2, after which Beluga Shipping expected potential fuel savings of up to 20-30 percent.rnThe "SkySails" system is the only sail system in the shipping sector so far that can be used in commercial operations without any restrictions in vessel use.rnWith an overall length of 132.2 metres on a beam of 15.87 metres, the vessel has a depth of 9.65 metres and a draught of 7.73 metres.rnThe vessel is powered by a single Caterpillar MaK 8M32 main engine rated at 3,840kW with auxiliary power supplied by two 315kW diesel generators and a single 70kW emergency generator.
