The world's first modern multipurpose newbuilding which uses wind energy for additional propulsion, has successfully completed its maiden voyage on Thursday, 13th of March 2008. It had made a double transatlantic crossing of about 12 000 sea miles endurance. With 8000t of general cargo on board, Beluga SkySails reached her port of destination having crossed several areas of adverse weather with winds of up to Beaufort Force 12. During the maiden voyage from Bremen via Guanta (Venezuela) and Davant (USA) the 160m2 towing kite has been released as often as possible to fly for periods of between a few minutes and up to eight consecutive hours. 'We can once again actually sail with cargo ships, thus opening a new chapter in the history of commercial shipping', says Lutz Heldt, master of the Beluga SkySails.
