The author, an independent member of Britain's House of Lords is a kind of de facto Minister for Maritime Affairs. Remarkably, in what was once the world's leading maritime nation, he is practically the only politician with any worthwhile knowledge of or interest in matters maritime. Lord Greenway has been a fanatical photographer of ships for much of his life. This has resulted in a number of books. He was a competitive international yachtsman and has seriously involved himself with a number of Britain's venerable maritime charities including the RNLI, the World Ship Trust and the Marine Society.
