Early in my career, I applied for a job as the Second Officer on the MV 'Gannett' going on her delivery from Hull, England, to St Johns Newfoundland. This had me concerned as the North Atlantic winter was no place for a South Pacific sailor. Asking how big the vessel was, the marine superintendent assured me she was quite big, muttering something about being over 1,000 gross tonnes. Decision-making is easy when you know what your values are, and the choice between poverty and a questionable job was made quickly.
