Renowned Australian ferry builder Incat Tasmania has launched the 'Lopez Mena', the world's first high speed passenger Ro-Ro ship fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Measuring 99 metres in length, with a beam of 26.9 metres and a design draught of 2.98 metres, the vessel is a masterpiece of new-generation vessel construction. Featuring a striking wave-piercing catamaran design, the basic structure comprises two slender aluminium hulls connected by a bridging section with a wave-piercing centre bow structure. As the first Incat vessel to be installed with dual-fuel LNG engines, two GE Energy LM2500 marine gas turbines provide main power. Each engine is rated for 22MW and drives a Waertsilae LJX 1720 SR water jet configured for both steering and reverse. Four Caterpillar C18 340ekW generators provide onboard electricity, with each genset fitted with marine brushless self-excited alternators and arranged for automatic start-up and paralleling.
