The theater of humor of the 'Other' Generation of 1927: Tono, Neville, Jardiel Poncela, Lopez Rubio and Mihura (Antonio de Lara, Edgar Neville, Enrique Jardiel Poncela, Jose Luis Lopez Rubio, Miguel Mihura, Spain).

The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the dramatic works of a forgotten group of Spanish humorists called the “‘Other’ Generation of 1927”. This term refers mainly to five writers: Antonio de Lara, known commonly as “Tono” (1896–1978), Edgar Neville (1899–1967), Enrique Jardiel Poncela (1901–1952), José Luis López Rubio (1903–1996) and Miguel Mihura (1905–1977). The dissertation provides a close reading of selected plays that points out the common links and mutual influences of their theatrical output in the historical context extending from the beginning of the twentieth century to the first two decades of the Franco era. It is during the latter years that these authors produced their most important works.; Chapter I explores two sources that contributed to the development of the new Spanish comedy: (a) traditional Spanish comic theater as it evolved through the teatro por horas and the works of Muñoz Seca, Carlos Arniches and Jacinto Benavente, and (b) the theoretical approaches of the Spanish avant-garde of the 1920's, especially as they related to humor.; Charter II focuses on the dramatic works that were produced by the group before the end of the Spanish Civil War, analyzing several of their innovative aspects in relation to the avant-garde movements. The aim of this chapter is to provide a clear delineation of the aesthetic points of view and theatrical techniques developed during this first period, so as to show how they subsequently evolved during the postwar years. This latter task is taken on in Chapter III through the examination of six key works of the Franco era: Eloísa está debajo de un almendro (1940) by Enrique Jardiel Poncela, Ni pobre ni rico sino todo lo contrario (1943) by Miguel Mihura and Tono, Francisca alegre y Olé (1949) by Tono, Celos del aire (1950) by José López Rubio, El baile (1952) by Edgar Neville and Maribel y la extraña familia (1959) by Miguel Mihura.; The dissertation ultimately puts on display the common understanding of humor found in the works of these five authors, thus identifying them as a unique and important group in the history of the Spanish dramatic stage. The conclusion suggests that there should be further critical assessment of the twentieth-century theater of humor in Spain because there are a number of dramatist who, like the “‘Other’ Generation of 1927”, have not yet been studied as carefully and thoroughly as they deserve.
