IDG: Tablet shipments up sharply in Q1

Worldwide tablet shipments continue to surge, growing 142.4% in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, according to a new report by International Data Corp. According to IDC's "Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker," tablet shipments totaled 49.2 million units in the first quarter. Apple Inc.'s iPad led in sales, with 19.5 million units shipped, up 65.3% over the year-ago quarter. No. 2 vendor Samsung Group shipped 8.8 million units in the first quarter, an increase of 282.6% over the same period last year. Tablets from ASUSTeK Computer, Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp. followed. While still the tablet leader, Apple saw its share of the worldwide market shrink to 39.6%, compared with 58.1% a year ago, as Samsung saw growing sales of its smaller Galaxy tablets and Microsoft entered the market with its Surface devices.
