Palo Alto Highlights from Palo Alto-AWIS Chapter Monthly Meetings

At the January chapter meeting of the Palo Alto-AWIS chapter (PA-AWIS), Dr. Julie Yu of San Francisco's Exploratorium gave a highly interactive presentation on effective ways of sharing the excitement of scientific discovery. Being both a scientist and a teacher by training, Dr. Yu gave an excellent argument as to why hands-on activities are the best teaching tools by guiding the attendees on simple experiments they did themselves throughout her talk.rnThe February 2009 chapter meeting featured Dr. Fitnat Yildiz, a professor of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Dr. Yildiz'talk on biofilm formation was informative and inspiring, highlighting the importance of studying basic life processes of microorganisms for finding actual solutions to diseases.
