U.S. Army Gets Serious About Future Vertical Lift

In this new era of great power competition against countries such as Russia and China, the U.S. Army believes it needs next-generation ro-torcraft that can overmatch these potential rivals and survive in dangerous urban jungles.To achieve this objective, the Army has identified three types of aircraft it says would give its soldiers and aviators a decisive advantage in future wars.Under the umbrella of the Army-led, multiservice Future Vertical Lift (FVL) initiative, the service will pursue a Future Attack/Reconnaissance Aircraft (Future ARA) and Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA). These two platforms will be optionally piloted, flying autonomously if needed.
