The Dornier Do 17, or 'Flying Pencil' (Fliegende Bleistift) is often associated with the rise of Hitler, as it was regularly seen flying over the Nuremberg Rallies of the 1930s. Despite its radical design and technologically superior construction, in reality it was all but obsolete by summer 1941. In October 1935, Dornier unveiled its Do 17 V1, a twin-engined commercial transport aircraft capable of carrying six passengers at relatively high speed, which had first flown on November 23, 1934. Modifications followed and in July 1937, the Do 17 V8 participated in the International Military Aircraft Competition in Zurich where it won the 'Circuit of the Alps' contest and demonstrated that contemporary fighters might have difficulty in catching it.
