Turkey took part in coalition airstrikes against IS for the first time on August 28. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated its air force had carried out the attacks in Syria as part of the US-led coalition against the extremist group. The targets struck were deemed a security threat to Turkey, the ministry said. Three days earlier the Pentagon announced an agreement had been reached on Turkish participation in the airstrikes. Turkey had previously bombed IS positions in Syria independently of the US-led attacks and without entering Syrian air space.
