摘要

During the latter part of the Cold War NATO air forces would regularly undertake squadron exchanges. While France was not part of NATO at the time, its armed forces fully participated in exercises, including the NATO Squadron Exchange Programme. One such exchange took place from August 31 to September 9, 1994, between the Tornado F3-equipped 29(F) Sqn based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and 12F of the Aeronavale (French Fleet Air Arm) with its Vought F-8E(FN) Crusaders based at Landivisiau in Brittany. The purpose of these detachments was to gain an understanding of the capabilities of other member nations in terms of equipment and personnel and to help standardise operating procedures. There was also usually an element of ground crew training in basic cross-servicing of the different aircraft types. No 11 Group RAF had responsibility for exchanges conducted by the units of Strike Command and selected the countries and the squadrons involved each year, though the squadrons were often given some input on the final choice.
