This is the twenty-seventh of a series of articles that will review historical Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) responses with significant lessons to learn. We will try to read between the lines of accident reports, magazine articles, conference presentations, pictures, and other information sources to attempt to determine what problems the emergency responders encountered, as well as their resulting size-up, action plan, and end results. We will try to learn from the past, in order to be able to perform better in the future. The accidents that will be reviewed in this series of articles can easily happen again. Our newer, younger generation of ARFF professionals may not even be aware of these emergency scenarios. The ARFF profession needs to review and analyze every aviation accident or emergency response, no matter how small, to learn what can be done to plan and prepare for similar incidents in the future. We need to learn from our experiences. Unfortunately, this does not happen as well as it should or could. Although there is plenty of information regarding the facts and probable cause of an aircraft accident, there is often very little information available about the emergency response. Until we start doing this, we may miss opportunities to improve, or worse, be doomed to make the same mistakes.
