In 1967, the Journal of Consulting Psychology published a study that would eventually shape the way we understand the importance of non-verbal communication. Eye contact, gestures, inflection, dress and proximity all play important but subtle roles in determining our understanding of a person's meaning. In fact, the researchers concluded that 93 per cent of communication is "non-verbal" in nature.
